Helping Hands

Scarecrow Hill Organic Farm is in it's 10th season of operation. We sell through Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative for our CSA shares and direct wholesale customers including restaurants, grocers and food coops. We also have a solar greenhouse for year round production.

We hire interns from April through mid November. Multi-year apprenticeships are possible. We will give preference to those who come for the entire season with serious intentions to make sustainable/organic farming a way of life. Interns should have a desire to learn and a willingness to work cooperatively, side by side with the farmers and farm members. Our focus is on simple hand tools, although we do use a walking tractor and an Allus G tractor. Field duties include soil prep, planting, transplanting, weeding, mowing, drip irrigation, harvesting, pest control, and light building maintenance. Management duties include, record keeping, assisting in the store, customer relations, and attendance at on-farm meetings and events.

We are firmly committed to teaching and providing an educational experience. We participate in the Sustainable Agriculture Internship Training Alliance of Southeastern Pennsylvania (SAITA). This is a wonderful learning opportunity that includes a monthly farm tour and time to interact with area interns. We can also provide opportunities to visit other area farms not a part of the network. We encourage two visits a month and will build this into your work schedule.

Balance between farm life and personal time is very important in our family. We work 40-50 hours a week with Sunday's off. We offer a $200 a week stipend as well as an end of season bonus of $50 per month for interns who complete their term. On farm housing is provided at no cost including utilities and garden food. We strive for a simple, sustainable, community lifestyle.

We finalize staffing by early March. Email or write describing yourself, your skills and experience, and what you are hoping to get out of an interning experience. Please include a resume and 3 references. A personal interview is required since interns become an integral part of the farm and our family.
